Evidence Based Evaluation, Diagnosis and Post-Arthroscopic and Non-Surgical Rehabilitation of the Hip

Bozeman, Montana – POSTPONED DUE TO COVID-19

Michael Reiman, PT, DPT, PhD, MEd, OCS, SCS, ATC, FAAOMPT, CSCS

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

The rate of surgical intervention for patients with hip pain has increased 2500% in a recent seven-year period, the largest encountered for any region of the body. Post-surgical protocols for these surgical interventions vary widely and are poorly reported while non-surgical intervention (e.g. physical therapy) has had limited reporting in the literature. This two-day course will equip the participant to clinically examine and diagnose hip pain as well as gain an understanding about what the literature does and does not say. Participants will gain skills to screen competing diagnoses and be able to discuss and detail post-surgical as well as non-surgical physical therapy rehabilitation for the individual with hip pain while balancing that with understanding of surgical procedure and individual patient variability.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Describe and list contributions of various contextual factors to the patient presentation for individual with hip and/or groin pain.
  • Compare and contrast the differential diagnosis of potential hip pain contributors.
  • Compare and contrast how contextual factors affect diagnosis and prognosis for individuals with hip pain.
  • Compare and contrast the different surgical procedures described.
  • Compare and contrast various personal and environmental considerations relative to specific surgical procedures, physical therapy and return to sport.
  • Compare and contrast various personal and environmental rehabilitation considerations relative to these procedures.
  • Appreciate the influence of various patient presentations relative to impairments, activity limitations and contextual factors.
